Ethiopia Steps Up Attacks on Somalia
LONDON, Dec. 25--(Washington Post)Ethiopian warplanes attacked the airport
in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu... And 150 miles away on the front lines
near Baidoa, sources said that fighters from Eritrea and Pakistan,
among others, had joined the Islamic movement's battle against Ethiopia
in a conflict that analysts fear could engulf the Horn of Africa.
....This front
has now been over run by Ethiopian and TFG forces, many of the Eritreans
and Pakistans have been killed and wounded. Ethiopian and TFG forces are
now heading to Mogadishu.

Ethiopia
Hits Somali Targets, Declaring War
Ethiopia’s prime minister, Meles Zenawi, said in a televised broadcast
that he had ordered the action because he had no choice... “Ethiopian
defense forces were forced to enter into war to protect the sovereignty
of the nation,” he said. “We are not trying to set up a government for
Somalia, nor do we have an intention to meddle in Somalia’s internal affairs.
We have only been forced by the circumstances.”(New York Times)

Thousands flee as war escalates in Somalia
(CNN)"They (the Islamic group) are claiming that Ethiopia is fighting
against them and this is totally false," said government spokesman Zemedkun
Teckle. "If the time comes that we have to fight, it will be very clear
to everyone and there will be no doubt because we will announce this to
our people."

The Spin-Doctors
of Eritrea
(From the East African Forum); October 4, 1999
Here comes a blow. A blow serious enough to reverse the aspirations
of Eritreans of good will. At the national level, Eritrea's future
situation is not necessarily cheerful with the existing leadership.
Eritrea is a nation where all Eritreans are at the mercy of one
man. It is now conceivable that we could have a nationwide reign
of terror...
... The commentary was first posted in 1999. Although some of
the spin doctors have now realized their mistake many still worship
Isayas Afeworki. Then and now we remind Eritreans their country
is going down. No one but themselves can extricate Eritrea from
its abyss. |

Eritrea:Over 500 parents of conscripts arrested
Resorting to collective punishment, the Eritrean government has arrested
over 500 relatives, mostly parents, of young men and women who have either
deserted the army or avoided conscription...
comment:-It is sad Eritrea has come to this,
over thirty years of war for independence has brought them this...the
worst in all of this, those living in comfort zone of the west are not
saying much except few courageous ones like the Awate and Asmarino team.

In the interest of full disclosure, here is a
comment from one of our readers on Ethiomedia."Strangely,
Ethiomedia has behaved in reporting the war. Other than linking news articles,
there were no incendiary comments that I usually read about the Ethiopian
army. They are a little bit sober and cleaned their sites up a little
bit.....Hum-mm interesting.
