Thought for Today
"Nothing in the world can take the place of
persistence. Talent will not; nothing in the world is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not;
unrewarded genius is a proverb. Education will not; the world
is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination
alone are omnipotent..." by Calvin Coolidge

(Saleh Younis, Awate.com):-"...If Meles
Zenawi doesn't withdraw soon, he is going to miss the boring
but bloodless war against dehenet he was engaged in with mixed
success for the last 15 years".
Saleh, have not you heard Meles wants to
withdraw and infact the withdrawal has started from areas
deemed stable in Somalia? Seriously, are you really asking
Meles to withdraw or to stay? Were you in favor of Ethiopia
going in the first place? This brings me to a story I heard.
A Somalia Ethiopian was so furious to hear Ethiopia was going
in to Somalia so much so he went on Negat Radio, a radio station
he was firmly against before to air his anger. With the success
Ethiopia had with the war he is now a changed man with a new
tune this time against early withdrawal. Could Saleh be also
trying to change his stand or just spinning in a "no spin
zone"! Ethiopia in many ways said it is not Ethiopia but the
Somalis who will resolve the problem with Somalia. Ethiopia
went in at the invitation of the Somalia Government. To worry
about Somalia more than the TFG is to be more Somali than
the Somali if you ask us Saleh!

Somalia: Heavy weight warlord lays down weapons
Five of the most feared warlords have now submitted their forces to the Somali Government and Ethiopia has started withdrawing its forces. This being the big success story on Somalia, shaibya (Eritrean govt) and its cohorts in the western media are magnifying minor incidents and talking about quagmire. The case of the grape is sour or?

If the alleged killing is true the culprits should be brought to justice.
If there is an eyewitness as alleged the authorities should not have hard

The Agony of Defeat! Isayas Afeworki says his extreme
UIC elements are not defeated in Somalia. Bad habit he has developed.
He said the same thing after his army was routed and squarely defeated
last time he invaded Ethiopia. Then while Ethiopian Forces were closing
to Aqordet deep in western Eritrea and camped high in the mountain of
Emba Sora in the east he was claiming his army was not defeated! Today
while the UIC elements, those not killed, are hiding in the skirts and
huts of Kenyan’s Wedi Afom thinks they are not defeated. What does he
know? Bad habit or he has more ill trained mercenaries waiting in Assab
to be sent!

The flip side to the attacks on the "first lady"
The purpose of this message is not to challenge or in anyway be argumentative
about your views on Ethiopian politics, however I would like to suggest
to you that, no matter what the intention, defaming or bad mouthing fellow
Ethiopians be it people of power or otherwise, is not and will never be
in parallel with what MLK preached! Check your premises! You can not juggle
between pacifism and virulent attacks as it suits you!
The single, bravest thing attributed to the legacy of MLK, is not his
oratorical skills or his resilience or what have you! The most significant
thing about MLK is that he dared to believe in the system! Now whereas
we do not enjoy the provisions of such a democratic system, at least not
in its entirety, however pitiful it is, badmouthing each other for the
appeasement of westerners and western media is a shameful act! Suffice
it to say that I for one do not believe in the importance of the acknowledgment
of one’s good deeds! Thus see such awards as insignificant as long as
people are willing to put their efforts where they are needed, of their
own free will!
I say check your premises again because, when one speaks about such issues
as “injustice” ,social, Economic or political, one must also ask oneself,
what have I done, within the limits of my existing reality, to change
such forms of “injustice”? If the ruling party is the root evil in all
of this, fine, but do we have to go forever claiming that it has to be
“baptized” so to speak for us to do our share to help alleviate the existing
problems of the country?
So let us all, and I mean all, be ready to do our bit in alleviating the
multitude of problems facing our nation first and do the talking later?
Or better yet “walk and talk at the same time?” to borrow a line from
one of the young American pop stars! [Yosef Tedla]

Legacy of a Dream Award celebrated successfully
The fifth annual “Let Freedom
Ring” initiative celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. was held successfully today at the Kennedy Center. The
Award ceremony was attended by dignitaries and speakers including
D.C’s young Mayor, Andrian Fenty and a musical celebration,
featuring Brian McKnight with the Let Freedom Ring Choir.
The Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS, whose
membership include first Ladies of 41 African Countries, honored
the celebration with organizing motto “Treat every child like
our child”. The First Lady of Zambia Mrs. Maureen Mwanawasa,
the First Lady of Rwanda Mrs. Jeannette Kagame, and the First Lady
of Ethiopia Mrs. Azeb Mesfin, who received the award on behalf of
the organization and who made their speech adorned with their respective
nationals dress, and flanked by United States Flag on one side and
their respective countries on the other, underlined the fact that
Africa is making progress and made impassioned call for the support
of the world community. Ethiopia’s first lady Azeb Mesfin’s
speech was warmly receive by the audience.
Other than three hecklers, who were escorted out during Georgetown’s
president speech, the much touted disruption turned out to be insignificant.
On the other hand a lot of Ethiopians and well wishers of the fist
lady were unable to attend because tickets were already sold out.
We will like to extend our appreciation to the Kennedy Center and
the Georgetown University for the deserved award. We also congratulate
Azeb Mesfin on her award. |
