| Duress?
What duress? It is give and Take!
Hailu
Shawil VOA Interview (excerpt)
To bad
for all who were stating that the apology letter was a forgery!
How do you explain such an action, which the disciplines has
stated "apology letter?…not by our leaders?' Given
a chance to clear the air on VOA about the apology letter
that written to the government and the people , Hailu Shawil
stated is a give and take - and a retreat for the greater
good.
If the
"Take" in Hailu Shawil's “give and take”
is the promise from the elders for the "release of Prisoners"
– it does not merit going to Kalit, for it is a point
EPRDF had agreed during the negotiation phase way back then.
To hear Hailu Shawil admit, in such cavalier manner, nothing
can be gained by going to prison, is amazing! Those who forewarned
the very outcome were forced to wear their warning as scarlet
letter and got dismissed from CUD as traitors.

Come again? Collective
Leadership?
Dr.Brihanu, to the bewilderment
of most, has been tagging along Hailu Shawil to disaster at
the cost of his party and CUD in general and the effort of
democratization (not to mention personal). Keste Demena people
must have decided it is time to draw the line to challenge
to challenge Hailu Shawil's All Ethiopia Party in the name
of collective. Andargechews openly defiant stand brings the
ungluing of CUD member organizations, which has been window
dressed in bravado of claim of unity and “sprit”
for the consumption of believers, out in the public. Ledetu
must be secretly laughing out loud in his parliament seat
where he is making tangible difference to his constituency,
is party and democratization in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's freed
leader defiant
Mr Hailu said he had not been tortured but had signed
the apology because among those jailed were people with small children.
He also dismissed talk of reconciliation. "We are slaves. I can't see how
we can reconcile if the guy in power can't reconcile," Reuters news agency
quotes him as saying Comment: The children
excuse again? Well, that they will talk back their word is a given. The point
is that they have not been tortured. That the apology is not PR of the governemt
but in fact have signed on the dotted line and they are in no position to
force the government to mediation. Hailue should remember that the pardon
is conditional on they accepting the Constitution and the rule of law. They
are stating on the wrong foot.

Ethiopia
pardons 38 opposition members
DIASPORA OPPOSITION SHOULD RETHINK
ITS PATH
In the end, not the attention seeking Ana Gomez, not the demonstration
at the White House, not the HR in Congress , but the work of Ethiopian
elders and acceptance of the Constitution that brought about positive
change. The Diaspora was responsible in brining the atmosphere that
led to the imprisonment of CUD leader. And it is time to rethink and
free themselves from hate politics and stop negatively affecting the
country.

Board
of Pardon begins examining forgiveness request
The Ethiopian Board of Pardon has begun looking into the
plea for pardon made by the leaders and members of the CUD who were convicted
and sentenced of charges of treason in connection with the unrest that
followed the May 2005 elections.
CLOWN TIME
Expectedly and sadly, one
clown in the opposition has surfaced to play the dutiful role of a side
kick sawing a doubt on the apology letter of the convicted CUD leaders.
A worthy politician would, if not try to help the mediators, at least
could trace them and ascertain the veracity of the information. This buffoon,
who can not even properly use his opposition day to present a meaningful
policy paper, complains about democracy. What he knows is how to talk
the talk of empty rhetoric of the opposition. It reminds me of the discussion
he had with VOA where he tried to explain away his joining the parliament.
"weyanen Afinchawn Yezen inawerdewalen." The irritated journalist
shot back "afecha Eyezalehu Siti'lma Afechahin teyezeh tewtaleh.
The Dr, who his used to a pat in the back, sheepishly replied. "Memoker
Eko And Neger new". These are the sad elements who sit in the middle
and their job is "Mamamok", "Machebcheb." They are
not here; they are not there, all they know is "Alu-tebale, Yebalal."
They call on people as if they are leaders and are no where to be found
on the critical hour.

Comment:
HOD’seyawik Doro Mata
The extreme Diaspora can’t figure what to make of the apology by
the convicted CUD leaders. While ERGETI 'NA GIDEL(KIC and KIL) are silent, some
say the letter (see video)is
forged by the “Three Stooges”. Others state “The amnesty
deal is a way out for the tyrant” – though it can’t
be clear as to why they prisoners would give “the Tyrant”
a way out, or “yemariam Menged”, of his predicament. One minute
they show bravado the next minute call SOS for the Shimagles. Yet others
compare the episode to that of submission of Minilik to Atse Yohannes
until a better day, reducing the struggle to build a democracy to 19th
century Tigrai-Shewa rivalry. What a shame.
If the past is any lesson, there is no high road in “CUD’.
The convicted will deny a deal is ever made right after they step out
of Kaliti and their followers will rejoice in mass denial, unless the
mediators made a press conference with them before their release. It is
to be remembered -the mediators back and forth hustle during the eleventh
our just to make CUD admit that the deal was not initiated by the Prime
Minster.
It is a sad event of “Gura Bekisu” party of bluff that defaced
a promising election, where Dr. Brihanu who could have done so much to
strengthen a multi party democracy, due to his proximity to the ruling
party and his credibility in the opposition, is now appreciated for juvenile
act of “walking out on the court”, where it likes to be draped
in tri-color but beg from Congress or EU parliamentarian to do their bidding,
where it accuse the ruling party of “dividing” the country
but works hand and glove with Shabia, OLF and ONLf who to date fighting
the colonial regime their mission. In the End, whether pardon or Amnesty
all will be, and should be done, constitutionally and in such a way strengthen
the budding democratization. It is time for assesment and reality check.
