Have Your Say!
What is the reason for salt and pepper price inflation in Ethiopia?...more
Do you agree with the above suggestion that the govt should do something about? Or are you of the mindset that market should be left alone to correct itself!...Have Your Say!
Thought for Today
Success has many faces; it need not be circumscribed by a title, a job, a cause. Success is not always "getting." It is more often "giving." It does not consist of what we do, but rather of what we are. Success is not always an accomplishment. It can be a state of mind. The quiet dignity of a home, the relationship of the individuals in that home. The continuing expression of an inquiring mind can mean more in terms of success than all the surface symbols of status. by Lady Bird Johnson

Demanding
more from the Loyal Opposition and our Institutions
If one has replaced the name America by Ethiopia
on Carter's election
reform proposal bill..and ask our crybaby opposition their
response to the stated election related problems would have
called for "yewot" Abiyot. But you rarely hear about
election certification and FEC
or election boards of respective states because parties abide
by the election law and changs are made institutional wise.Election
are tracked by the media and winner is projected by responsible
media like CNN right after polls are closed making the legal
certification ceremonial.
The so called loyal opposition in Ethiopia are
just an embarrasment. They don't have institutional strength.
They don't admit they don't have institutional strength. They
deny anything they agree with the ruling party. No one asks
them what they have done in what ever space they said they have
to consider staying in parliament worthy. They sit in their
comfortable fence that devide the extrem opposition and the
ruling party shifting their position to the party they perceive
has the power.
We say our institutions are emerging. But they
much to prove themselves to be credible. What is their vision
to their institution, what practical things do they do to leave
their respective agency better than they have received it .
Go to to the Ethiopian
election web page. Vola we are back in 2005.
UEDP-Medhin has raised interesting
issue. Ethiopian TV and Radio Agency's objection to its
program amount to stiffling freedom of speech. Well the free
ride of 2005 is over. Government institutions are asserting
their authority starting with Ethiopian TV and Radio Agency
as seen by its ruling over opposition over campaign ads. Ethiopian
TV and Radio Agency should come out and state clearly what is
within their power.
Comment:
Air time for political parties’ only shows that the Media is not doing its job. If the Media does its job there won’t be a need for allocation of air time. We don’t see the media showing democracy in action. It lazily puts the mic infront of “Balesiltan” who tell us how every thing is good and dandy. Where are the analysts, where are the truth squad, the behind the seen investigative journalist?
But we are in a country where we have irresponsible opposition who are in the game as a niche business where whining is good enough to be taken as an alternative policy or want to use the space to their end game of overthrowing the government.
In 2005 the opposition took advantage to challenge discredit and overthrow the system instead of challenging EPRDF. The ruling party never understood its duty as a government and as a party and ended up not doing either of them. Some of the opposition parties are not partners for democracy. They are just beneficiary of the democratic space. Smarting from 2005 it looks the government is about to do governmental duty and protect the system primarily and make sure the parties in the game enjoy their constitutional right.
EUDP-Medhin seems to be breaking new ground and becoming a legitimate loyal opposition that should be taken seriously. The Quote ETV objected can be pointed to the selective areas where there was problem. But in the context of the aftermath of the election 2005 it is clear it will be taken as a general assessment of election 2005 and said to gain political capital of the sentiment of opposition supporters. UEDP-Medhin response is disingenuous and has not learned yet that pandering to the extreme who does not accept the legitimacy of the institution will hurt the party itself primarily. Don't think you can kill the goose and have the egg too.

Comment: One of the catch phrase Ethiopians are very familiar is "qey mesmer” (red zone). This has been used to warn Ethiopia's enemy that they should not cross the red zone unless they are ready to meet their creator. Ethiopia has kept its word in this regard; ask Shaibya and the UIC elements of Somalia. But it seems our own corrupted chew berbere negadies (salt pepper merchants) did not comprehend the red zone the government was warning them not to cross. Many speculate the current price pressure in the country on basic commodities is mainly due to greed and a miscalculation by merchants that support opposition forces to put pressure on the government. This miscalculation is about to backfire. The people can not be held hostage by greedy merchants and the government would not allow few merchants to strangle the economy in the name of free market economy. There is no good reason for salt or any home grown commodity price to sky rocket. In any developed country the market should have corrected itself in time before damage is done but Ethiopia is not a developed country with a robust private economy. Thus why the government should interfere and put a hold on the greedy and ill advised merchants or supply the market the basic commodities. Enough is enough!
(prteam@eprdf-sf.org):-We appreciate your concerns on the challenges facing Ethiopia and the region as a whole. However, a well-balanced U.S. policy needs to be based on factual on ground information and not on propaganda by few...
