The chief executive officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Ato Gerima Wake on June 1 will receive on behalf of his airlines the 'Africa Business of the Year' Award 2007 at the 15th Africa Achievement Awards Gala Dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California. This is in recognition of Ethiopian's 61 years of service excellence to the continent, according to the organizers.
Ato Wake will join other notable African honorees; the Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Botswana, Professor Charles C. Soludo and Mrs. Linah K. Mohohlo in receiving this year's awards. The honorees were selected by a committee made up of the Editorial Board of The African Times / USA and select members of the Africa Diplomatic Corps.
"This is a wonderful and awesome opportunity to honor Ethiopia in the United States and begin to change the sad image of the entire Africa in the western world. Most of the world hardly knows that Ethiopian Airlines ranks among the top airline carriers in the aviation industry", C. Charles Anyiam, editor-in-chief of The Times said
"It gives our Board great delight to highlight the accomplishments of Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopia as a country. All those who have had the privilege of flying this great airline can attest to the fact we made a marvelous choice in naming this airline as the Africa Business of the Year 2007."
The Africa Achievement Awards which was established in 1991 to honor those who contribute to the uplift of Africa's profile through their achievement is part of the official Africa Day celebration in the United States.
The Consul General of Ethiopia in Los Angeles, Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie commended the organizers for their decision to honor Ethiopian Airlines and called Ethiopians in the United States to come out support Ato Wake as he receives the honor on June 1.
"It is a truly a moment for rejoicing because it is something to be proud of not only for Ethiopia but for all of Africa", he said.
