A Letter of Rage against Meddlers

It was with utter disappointment that I read Ms. Ana Gomez’s comments on the BBC web page with regard to the sentencing of the jailed and convicted CUD leaders. She shamelessly referred to their sentencing as farcical and inhumane adding that it was as bad as the death penalty. She even went on urging the EU to seek their release. Several fellow Ethiopians have written about her intrusive and unruly behavior over the past two years including our prime minister, who eloquently left the so called EU chief observer naked in his three-part letter to the editor of the Ethiopian Herald. How can we tell her any clearer? Ms. Gomez, could you bring your meddling in our country’s affairs to a stop? Haven’t you learnt anything in the past couple of years that there is practically nothing that the EU can do to release the jailed CUD leadership? Now, probably to your astonishment, the CUD leaders themselves have realized that no external pressure can set them free and that they have entered a guilty plea and submitted a letter of forgiveness to the Ethiopian government requesting for clemency. It is high time that you realized the futility of outside pressure to the release of the jailed opposition leaders as well as to the realization of democracy in our country. The majority of Ethiopians, the silent majority in the diaspora included, believe that even if there is a long way to go, our country is in the right direction toward building a democratic system and a system of good governance, both of which are in a state of sea change. It is only the vocal diaspora and the likes of Ana Gomez, who have been blinded to see the reality in the democratization process. The top CUD leaders were brought before the court in the presence of international observers and they have had fast and fair trial. This is a big stride in the functionality of the judiciary system flinging a gesture that no one is above the law.
Ms. Gomez, has there been anything either the EU or you as an MP could do, something could have been done in the last couple of years. To your dismay, there was nothing which you accomplished and you need to be told once again that there is NOTHING you can achieve with respect to the release of the CUD leaders and broadly the expediency of democracy in our country. It can only be realized by Ethiopians and Ethiopians ONLY. You need to come round and sense your wrongdoing and we need to continue to tell you in clear terms that you MUST stop abusing your position at the EU parliament and stop transgressing our domestic dealings. Our constitutional order and our judiciary system are functioning pretty well even though much remains to be done. It is very unfortunate that you couldn’t learn even a bit two years later. You are as unrefined as you were two years ago. As you have a functioning parliament, we have our own operational one and I strongly request you to LEAVE US ALONE! Enough is enough and for heavens sake stop prying in matters pertaining to our country. After all, you have completed your mandate; can’t you understand???
Why is it that you are going out of your way so much as if you were suffering from some form of guilty consciousness? You might be one of those reckless individuals who went out of their way to give green lights to the opposition political leaders to go ahead and use every means to unseat the government and tear down the constitutional system through unconstitutional means including violence. In the event that they are detained, you again might have hinted to them that you would do all in your powers to set them free using your chief observer and EU MP positions. Unfortunately you failed miserably. In order to make up for your failure, you constantly meddle in our affairs and you keep on failing. It surprises me a great deal that you couldn’t learn from your past mistakes and quit your prying in our domestic affairs. Now the solution would come not from any external forces, the EU and the US included, but ONLY from respected Ethiopian elders or elders of Ethiopian origin and the Ethiopian government. We have strong faith in what they have been doing thus far and in what they will continue to do and that way we expect a lasting solution. I would like to say to you and others in the diaspora with same mentality in unequivocal terms that you must stop interfering in our country’s affairs and mind your own business instead.
In a related note, there are some so called learned individuals of Ethiopian origin in the West who have been doing all sorts of things to harm their motherland forgetting what the country had invested on them to put them where they are now. If they were sane with the right state of mind, they should have been heavily indebted to Mother Ethiopia. It is unfortunate that they have not been able to pay back what the country had done to them. Instead, these BAD KIDS have been engaged in matricidal acts for the past several years. So called learned men, if there’s nothing you can contribute positively, please stop stabbing our country in the back. Yenat t’ut nekashoch! Some of you have not set foot in Ethiopia for over two decades and you are trying to be champions of peace, justice and democracy in our country. We pray that you come to your senses and do positively if you can or leave us and our country alone if you can’t.
Finally, I am quite optimistic that the Board of Amnesty will consider the age of the sentenced CUD leaders and the many years of service they rendered to the country and submit recommendations to the Head of State requesting to set them free. There will be nothing to be gained by keeping the aging opposition leaders behind bars once the judicial proceedings are over and as long as they are remorseful and ask for clemency. I am overly hopeful that the Head of State will consider the recommendations offered by the Board of Amnesty and use the New Ethiopian Millennium as an opportunity to set free not only the CUD leaders but also many other prisoners who request for forgiveness. It is such a domestic resolution of Ethiopian nature that will work effectively and bring a lasting solution! This will also send a clear signal to meddlers and others with same state of mind.
Ethiopia will continue to flourish under visionary leaders and diligent & dedicated Ethiopians! As it has been said over and over again by many other optimistic Ethiopians, may the new millennium usher an era of restoration, reconciliation, negotiation, tolerance, love, peace, respect for our constitution and each other, prevalence of the rule of law, prosperity, and steady development for Imma Ethiopia and Ethiopians. May the Almighty God continue to bless our country and its peoples!
