The Tigray community in Stockholm and its environs held a successful meeting March 3, 2007 and was concluded by adopting a resolution to build a school in Tigray. A video clip, covering the overall developmental efforts taken by Tigray Development Association (TDA) was shown prior to the speech delivered by Ambassador Tewolde Gebru, Executive Director of TDA-International.
Ambassador Tewolde dwelt during his speech on the numerous achievements
of various communities and branches of TDA at home and abroad and gave ample
evidences on the importance of participating in project forms. He also noted
that the priority given by TDA is education with high enrolment of children to
schools fulfilling basic standards and requirements. He also praised the role
the members of the community played in accomplishing earlier tasks and projects
as well as contributions. After discussions and deliberations by the audience,
a five-member project management committee was elected along with the executive
committee of TDA branch in Sweden to carry out a pledge and fund-raising to
accomplish the task of building a school. The will and spirit of the
participants was high confirming their readiness to revive their TDA organization,
stand by the side of the people in order to extricate the people of Tigray from
poverty, illiteracy, diseases, etc.
The meeting was then immediately followed by celebration of the 32nd
anniversary of the birth of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Ambassador Tewolde as guest of honor held a speech by paying a tribute to the
memory of the fallen heroes in the fight against the fascist Derg and by
emphasizing the necessity of upholding peace, democracy and development through
the concerted efforts of all Ethiopians. H. E. Ambassador Dina Mufti, the
ambassador of Ethiopia to Sweden delivered a speech in recognition and memory
of the struggle and promised that the Embassy would do its level best to
facilitate for Ethiopians and other citizens to conduct relationship in all
fields possible for the transformation of Ethiopia
Many people cheerfully attended the event, which was jointly organized
by the Union of Tigrians in Europe (UTE)-Sweden Branch, Union of Tigrian Women
in Europe (UTWE)-Sweden Branch and Tigrai Development Association-Sweden
Branch. Renowned artists Hiluf Alemu and Abrehet Abdu with their newly
dispatched songs and accompanied by the skilled keyboard player Alex gave a
vibrating celebration throughout the night long stay at the hall. Income
generated from this event is to be used for the school building project. We
want at the same time to thank all who cooperated and coordinated this occasion
to be appreciated and unforgettable.
