Africa and Globalization
Though cautious, Developing Nations, including Ethiopia and other African never rejected globalization. For a long time, African struggle rather revolved for new economic and political order for a long time in the history of globalization. They wanted Mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty and non-interference in one another’s affairs. They called for the full permanent sovereignty of every state over its natural resources and the rights of every country to adopt the economic and social system that seems appropriate for its own development and to not be subjected to discrimination and other kinds of pressure as a result. Africans want regulation and supervision of the activities of transnational corporations by taking measures in the interest of national economies of the countries where such multinational corporations operate. They demanded trust and equitable relationships between the prices of raw materials and manufactured goods (fair trade) and extension of active assistance to developing countries by the entire international community; free from any political or military conditions; Securing favorable conditions for transfer of financial resources to developing countries. Africa always wanted and struggled for reform, for just and democratic global governance
The Unique Moment
At present, Ethiopia and Africa are facing a unique period in the history of globalization. On the one hand, the old and the staunch advocates of globalization and some of their leaders in American and European are back-pedaling on globalization and on an open economy and free trade while on the other hand, the new global advocates are a calling for more globalization and an open economy and free trade.
The Reason for Anti-globalization Tendency
De-globalization forces in America and Europe arose because of the sluggish world economy, the migrant problem, the Decline of cross-border, trade, and investment on the international level. Today, many have realized our world is full contradictions. While globalization has brought growing material wealth and advances in science and technology.Human civilization has developed as never before because of it. Contrary to this development many regional conflicts, global challenges like terrorism and refugees, as well as poverty, unemployment and widening income gap have all added to the uncertainties of the world.
The problems mentioned above have pressured the de-globalization forces to wrongly blame for the ill of the worldwide economy on globalization forgetting the benefit it has brought to them. They fail to realize that economic globalization resulted from increasing social productivity, and is a natural outcome of scientific and technological progress, not something formed by any individuals or any countries. Economic globalization has powered global growth and facilitated movement of goods and capital, advances in science, technology and civilization, and interactions among peoples.
Anti-globalization forces seem to be caught in the middle ground between denials of the present and the past reality in the shadow of the Superstition of populism, protectionism and anti-immigrant rhetoric which will hinder themselves and the global community the benefit from the coming of the hopeful light of the new and the coming storm of globalization.
The New Determined Globalization force
On the other hand, the pro-globalization forces are calling the acceptance of the coming of the multi-polar balance of power. They point to the unipolar, uni-colored and western dominated globalization are taking historical transformation towards multipolar, multicolored and with diverse countries at a different stage of socioeconomic development are on the rise at this juncture in the history of globalization. These forces already are encouraging nations to manage their internal socio-economic problem, to benefit from the integration of world economy. They are saying instead of playing blame game countries should make joint efforts to push ahead with better globalization approaches with more inclusiveness and win-win relation. They are calling for reform of international organization; to revive the world growth back on track, and to safeguard the openness of global economy to benefit all. Moreover, they call for emerging powers to have more voice and influence in global governance and call for avoidance interference, domination, war, strife, and misinformation and for the nations to benefit from globalization while fulfilling its global responsibility.
While looking at the next objective reality of the socio-economy activity of interrelation of the world community, the potential forces of economic resource and their political determination to repair global problems is undeniable. The new capable and powerful forces that advocate globalization are acting and promising to be robust driving forces for global growth and adequate global economic governance. If this promises put to concrete reality, it can adapt to new developments in the world economy and sustain the steady growth of the global economy. The hope also contains unique benefit to gradually fix and withstand many of the complexity of the past and the present sociopolitical and economic problems facing the people of the world.
Concrete Promise and Action of Pro-Globalization forces.
To mention some these immensely actual practical realities are the acceptance of multilateralism to work for sustain growth of the world economy and allow different of a socio-economic development model based on the real condition of various nations without interference. The proposal the “one belt one road” and the Silk Road initiative to connect the world and with a fund more than trillion allocated is in the process of practical implantation. Already many countries from Europe, Russia, Asia, and Africa have realized its tremendous advantage and have signed cooperation agreements with China. On this project, Chinese companies have invested $50 billion, and launched some major projects in the countries along the routes, spurring the economic development of these countries and creating many local jobs. The “Belt and Road” and Silk Road initiative originated in China, but it has delivered benefits well beyond its borders through the connectivity of the world and movements goods, Capital, and humans. China also promised to help in the capacity production of developing nation. Plus, China only is expected to import $8 trillion of goods, attract $600 billion of foreign investment and make $750 billion of outbound investment. Chinese tourists will make 700 million overseas visits plus when other investment and economic activity from Europe, USA, and the America and other countries included it will create an enormous market, more capital, more products and more business opportunities for other countries than ever before. I firmly believe Ethiopia should realize these initiatives, promises, and the next global economic activities are like an ocean wave. Hence, Ethiopia with internal strength and with coordinated support of its people inside and outside undoubtedly can utilize the ocean wave of globalization to bring a tremendous benefit to Ethiopia’s economic development.
The Task of Ethiopia
What then Ethiopia and all Ethiopians including those in the diaspora should do at this unique moment in Globalization history? I am totally in agreement with the government that Ethiopia primarily must continue looking inward more than ever. It must proceed with its work on its right principle policy of developmental economy with its backbone democracy peace and fight rent seekers day and night. This, I believe will prevent corruption and shut all loopholes for the enemies of Ethiopia not to exploit Ethiopia’s flaws. Plus strengthens the people and the government resolve to take necessary and unified action to detect and overcome any difficulties as it arises locally and defend the country from external anti-people forces. The internal strength and building integrated agricultural lead industrialization also will help Ethiopia to have great potential to gain from the coming of the new globalization trend and to accomplish its responsibility as a member of the world community to actually fight poverty, contribute to global peace and in many other tasks greater and better stage than now.
Also, the government of Ethiopia must continue to assist traders, investors, from all over the worlds that come to participate in Ethiopia’s economic development creating jobs and technological transfer and as same time benefit themselves. I support the encouragement given to the young to be innovative and develop small scale business so they can transform themselves to the owners of big enterprises. It is commendable to see the government backing the private national investors recognizing that they are the motor of Ethiopia’s development. It is admirable to see the massive development of infrastructure facilitating connectivity in the entire country creating a favorable condition for transportation of people, goods, and services. The enormous effort to make education and medical and social care available to many in spite of difficulties, this endeavor not only a human right task but also puts Ethiopia in a better position to benefits from the upcoming new globalization trend.
Opinion on Big Enterprise and Their Benefits and Globalization
I have witnessed one of the enterprises the FDRE METALS AND ENGINEERING CORPORATION (METEC) role in manufacturing, and cooperative work with domestic investors, small business, and the people are commendable. I believe organization or industries like METEC, the existing endowment organizations; and industries created by cooperation of domestic investors must be formed and be helped to be big conglomerates as time and condition permit. If Ethiopia has these kind Corporations, the advantage is enormous. This corporation can easily do research and development work in cooperation with universities and other institution and be a source of innovation. They will be able to form a joint venture, with indigenous, foreign investors and similar enterprises in other African countries and with their industries. Moreover, as these Ethiopian owned firms expand and grow, they can effortlessly learn the industrial know-how and sophistication of the big foreign companies ability to raise fund on the global market and be savvy how it works. Then they can trade in stocks and shares to accumulate funds without losing the major holding of the enterprise. This and the integrated agricultural lead industrial development working for the industrial lead economy will help Ethiopia to gain Market share locally, neighboring countries and globally and protect the country from external economic crisis or shock such as capital outflow and the decline of global commodity price. Ethiopia has to realize that China, America, and Europe which have huge indigenous enterprises have dominant market share and global competitive rank. Hence Having. Big enterprise improves Ethiopia's lot.
The Task of All Ethiopians.
We should help Ethiopia utilize the coming positive storm of globalization to outpace the avalanche of poverty and degradation through internal strength and unity. All Ethiopians where ever we are must be united on shared agenda to fight poverty. And also we must contribute in infrastructure, in health care, in education, in art, in bringing peace, in ecological wisdom, injustice, and all the policies that will make a difference in the lives of the people.
However, we while uniting on common agenda we must struggle on our differences and solve our problem peacefully and amicably. This will sharpen our awareness and as the same time give our people alternative choices. Thank you to the leaders, nation, and nationalities of Ethiopians inside and outside and to the world community.
