The return of Aweys to Mogadishu worries me a lot. I am especially concerned that he returned back to Asmara from Sudan to consult with the Chief of Terrorists, Isaias Afeworki. It is sad that Ethiopia was unable to catch or kill this known terrorist with a lot of blood in his hands. The new Somali government will be under Aweys control. In short he will be the most influential figure in Mogadishu and Aweys will take his assignments from Ethiopian enemies seriously and I am not optimistic that there will be peace and Somalia will be a stable county soon. Ethiopia should be very vigilant now as ever.

I wish this signals the begnning of the end of the conflict in Somalia. The people have had enough and the region needs peace.
It is not easy to know how his return will impact the political situation in Somalia. One wonders how Isayas would have let him leave Eritrea to return to Somalia, if there were no some tacit agreement between them. It is also interesting he had to go back to Eritrea before returning to his country. It would have been easier to return directly from Sudan. May be, Isayas's influence on the Shekh Awewy is still considerable. Lets us see what happens.

I also think Aweys and Sharif may have sealed a deal in Khartoum then agree Sharif to go to Ethiopia to brief authorities and Awey to Eritrea to brief Isayas Afeworki. Somali PM was in Addis days back.

What will be interesting to know is did both Isayas and Ethiopia agree to whatever the two (Awey and Sharif) have agreed?

I think Awey will be stupid to continue being a messenger for Isayas and terrorist while living in Somalia as public figure. I think the West will not buy in to that not to mention Ethiopia.

It seems to me Isayas is losing a grip of the Somalia foot soldiers he used to enjoy having. If he is not then prepare for nasty Somalia as countries around will not allow Al-Qaeda or Shabab to roam freely!

I think we should be very careful with Aweys return. He is already a designated terrorist. He undermined our country, Ethiopia and tried to inflict harm to our forces when they were in somalia. I hope the Ethiopian government will track this Aweys every move and keep tab on him. Not so good news. May God protect Ethiopia.

I think It will be the end of the conflicts of somali and of the region in general If aweys And sherif stund free from Issayas Afeworky.If their agenda is the problem of somali's people it is time to them to bring peace in the horn.

The return of Aweys to Somali capital Mogadishu, can be considered both good and bad news up on the agenda he is caring back with him. It is a good news if Aways is coming back home with the intention to play a positive role in the reconciliation and stabilization efforts of the government, to assist it in bringing peace and security to the country and to millions of people who suffered of war terribly in a lawless country without operable government for almost two decade by now. That would be a most well come idea. On the other hand I am still skeptical whether or not he is returning to do the job for his Master Isaias Afworki from inside Somalia. I am doubtful that his return is happening without the knowledge and blessing of his Master Isaias Afworki of whom I cannot imagine that he wishes stable Somalia, which means also to some extent a stable Ethiopia. In fact “Mr Aweys flew into the Somali capital, Mogadishu” it is reported. If he flew, sure with the blessing of Eritrea. The question is with which message Afwerki aloud or agreed on the return of Aweys to Mogadishu? To assist the government in stabilizing the country? That would mean in other words Isaias is assisting the work of his arch foe Ethiopia who is working to stabilize Somalia. We all know very well that Isaias Afworki will do anything in his capacity to harm Ethiopia. It is not new that he works through his puppets inorder to fulfill its dream of destabilizing our country Ethiopia. Isiayas would even go as far as cooperating with Satan and devil if it is about weakening the Ethiopian government and harming Ethiopia. In addition to that it is doubtful also to say that up on a night Aweys has thrown away his extremist belief which even connects him with the terrorist group Alqida. It is doubtful in the same way he has thrown away his hate to Ethiopia. Any way time will show us with which bag on his back is Aweys returning back to Somalia: the bag with peace and reconciliation to Somalis including fraternal co-existence with his neighbor country or with his old bag holding extremist ideas and his Master Isaias’s messages to destabilize Ethiopia from inside Somalia changing his headquarter Asmara.

We need peace and stability with our Neighbour Somalians. They deserve peace after two decades of bloodshed. I guess I have gathered some info from my Somalian friends here, he graduated from the University where I am. Unbiased, educated Somalians who wish and yearn to see peace returned to Somalia, they are saying, if they have to judge Sharif by his father, Sharif cannot be trusted since he is the son of a very corrupt Somalian father. I did disgree with my Somalian friends that Sharif cannot be judged by his father since he is educated, he has lived in the civilized world and he has even seen the merit of hatred, conflict in his land and .
However, Ethiopia has to beef up all its alarms and immediate responses for the unseen. This means Ethiopia has be ready all the time for the worst Scenario.

Issayas said very recently that Sharif is a stooge, and now he blesses Awey to fly to Mogadisho? This begs many questions, Ethiopia must monitor closely the development in Somalia. Sherif has to be transparent with Ethiopian government if he really wishes to bring stability to all side.

My advice to the Ethiopian government, let us give them a second chance, but ready for the worst scenario. If ONLF, OLF, ... are taking refugee there in the meanwhile, I think this time, it will not be necessary to fight awey, it is easy to get rid off our cousin once forever and we can close the chapter of Shabia.

Well, I hope his return will be for a good cause. Somali people have suffered a lot, and the authorities should say enough is enough. In my opinion, the meddling of neighbouring countries is one of the root cause of the problem. When Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) managed to control most of somalia, at least a relative peace and order prevailed, even the TFG at the time were happy that Mogadishu was snatched from the yoke of the corrupt warlords. Then US and Ethiopia came into the picture, for their own interest, and spoiled the fruits of success. The islamists are now back to Mogadishu, they will establish Shari'a soon, and we are back to square one. In my opinion the big loosers in this game are US and Ethiopia. I hope Aweys, Sherif, and al-shabab will sortout their differences and bring peace the poor and desperate Somali people.

We should stop fooling ourselves. It looks like we have lost our influence in Somalia significantly. Everything happening is not to our liking. The UIC is back in power even more radicalized. Isayas Afwerki seems to have more influence than Ethiopia in both Somalia and Sudan. Asmara and khartum played a trick to reconcile Aweyes and Sharif. Recently the new Somali prime minister told Ashraq Alwasat that Somalia has a lot of common interest to share with Eritrea in the region. This is alarming and pretending and fooling ourselves that the situationin Somalia is to our liking is not only stupid but also dangerous.

This should worry you TPLF and AIGA. This guy will not sleep until he see his vision accomplished. he will work underground in somalia to create a more radical group and coordinate efforts with Shabia, ONLF and OLF to create a southern front on you.

I think, Awey's being islamist shouldn't concern us. I think what will concern us is if Awey interfer in the torritorial integrity of Ethiopia.Let them introduce sharia if it works for them. religion doesn't teach any interference in other country's affair,therefore we can wait & see what this guy is up to & we will make our decision to protect our torritorial integrity.

I agree with dan. Let's not be naive as far as the desire of Isaias Afeworki is concerned. What satisfies Isaias and his colleagues is not the prosperity and development of Eritrea, but rather the demise and destruction of Ethiopia. Period. Dear my fellow Ethiopians, let us not be floolish? okay? We do not care what they believe in, if they want they can worship Satan. It is not our business.

What we must worry is about our country? I just pray God bring a new leader into Ethiopia who love Ethiopia, a leader who take pride in the name Ethiopia.

Why the Ambassador telling us we have to wait until he builds a road from Moyale to Marsabit? why? Does the Ambassador know from Moyale to Mombas is about 1200 km. Why does he wish or choose to go all the way to Mombassa?

I Think, D AWEYS has been left under scuff for very long time.He was on the doc under sever scrutiny of Isayas.Know that Isayas has been stretched by sever internal rangling and very accute food shortage.People in Eritrea are dying in numbers.I do not thing that he will be still be able to streatch his hand every where.I thing the containment that Ethiopia has done has been very,very effective and subsequently successeful.It has hit all the desired targets.so I do not see any forseable danger could come specially from Isayas via D awayes to Ethiopia.D Aweys has already been tarnished and badly mulled for positioning himself outof the conciliatory process.I can see no real treat or any meaningful negotiation with this terrerist and Isayas.They will be soon history.Let us not bother about them....but as a precautionary measure you still do not write them off that easily...they can create or pretend to create the simila of embarassement yet.so watch out to the most possible adventure they will be seeking for.

It is non of our business, weather Aweys or Ahmed they are the same....Somalia belongs to them. We can keep our fingers crossed in our borders not within Somalia. So the business taking place in Somalia shouldn't worry us cos we can keep our selves in our borders.

Again weather we like it or not we have lost our influence both in Sudan and Somalia. I hate to admit it but Isayas Afwerki has played his cards very cleverly ... This is how

1. By dragging us in to a very unpopular war in Somalia, he tarnished our image in the world.

2. By organising a Somali resistance movments, he was able to make them focus on one common enemy.

3. He waged a media war making us look like an attack dog for the unpopular Bush administration.

4. He was able to put the Islamic court back in power including aweyes.

4. By inviting Omar Albashir, he put Melles in a hard and rock place between Albashir and the west. Melles was forced to invite Albashir against the wish of the western powers.

Now even the British are courting Afwerki. The EU has already showered him with millions of Euros and it is a matter of time the US would do the same. Donald Payne a well known Shabia lover is the head of African committee. We have a lot of homework to do.

I think Ethiopia gets more money than Isayas Afeworki from EU or Britain! Your argument that Isayas is wining the west simply because he is, atlast, getting few millions from EU is simplistic.

EU gives Aid for many reasons. In Eritrea's case the AID is coming to shut Isayas Afeworki so they can reconstruct the Horn region according to their wishes! Will it work we shall see.

Second not sure how you see things but Isayas did not tarnish Ethiopia's image! On the contrary.

Isayas due to his love affair with anything that is anti Ethiopia has caused him to be isolated as a damaged good for too long. What he got out of Somalia is shame and the nick name "Al Tahir".

In any case, yes Ethiopia should watch what Aweys does in Somalia. I do hope his return was with full knowledge of Ethiopia but in case it is not, Ethiopia must be mindful.

Zeru!!! I wish you were right and I was wrong but I am afraid the reverse is true. I really find it hard to believe Isayas didn't win when Tahir Aweyes the sworn enemy of Ethiopia is back in Somalia. Also I don't know why we shouldn't be worried when Donald Payne, Enough Project and other liberal ideologs who would hate anything Bush did are in power in Washington. These people would do anything to win Isayas Afwerki back to Washington's fold and they have said so openly.

Sometimes I am amazed by your foolishness. Isaias is more hardliner than Aweys and they will continue working together.Isaias is known for keeping his words. Isaias even wanted to accept to be included in the terrorist list than expelling Aweys. What else more does Aweys need? During his stay in Eritrea Aweys learned one lesson from Isayas. that is Persistence. He demanded the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops. He got it. Now he is demanding the withdrawal of African Union troops. He will get that too. All were demanded and have been articulated by Shabait.com. The point is Aweys is the John Grang of Somalia. Ethiopia should brace for showdown with Aweys or make peace with Isaias.

Isayas has in an uncertain terms been told to stay up or put up.Recently, a lot of western countries have been able to organising to close their embassies from eritrea among them are G Britain and few others.Isayas has already started closing few of its Embassies in Europ and has opened one in Iran...I think the situation for Isayas is very flued and tricky.It is really very testing and challenging for him I think the world has learned about isayas far better now a days than he was a couple of ayears ago.What is not chanhed is still his ego.I think I am fair to say that Isayas is in trouble than he himself has anticipated.Let us have our watchful eyes fixed and see where the situation leads.

In the first place, why did we create a nation called Eritrea carved out of our land and our people? why? for what? We were told for the sake of peace? where is the peace with our province? for how long are our people on both sides going to live like this? is this a lasting solution? No matter what is Issayas is, this is not a tenable contract? This contract of a nation of Eritrea must be shattered, the walls that is dividing our people and making our people live in fear must be torn out. We cannot afford our people to continue in perpetual fear. According to me, the issue Eritrea must be revisited and broght to a closure. Beth I really find it hard to believe What you stated. How come a liberal ideolog who took a firm stand on engaging the enemy (Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Taliban etc etc) would take a strong stand against Afwerki who has less economic and political significance to the west. If the British are closing thier embassy as you stated, why would the EU where UK is a good standing member give millions of dollars to Afwerki? Don't forget that the liberal ideologs who villified Ethiopia's policy in Somalia are in power in Washington.

It is difficult to judge who the winners and the losers are at this stage. However, it is a fundamental fact that Ethiopia is now surrounded by its most viscous and most dangerous enemies. These include the jihadist in Somalia and the Eritreans whose only mission in life is to see the destruction and annihilation of Ethiopia. It appears our intervention in Somalia was a failure. We lost both blood and treasure so that both Awey and Sharif could rule Somalia with a jihadist agenda and Sharia law and this is exactly what Issayas wanted.

If Meles had allowed the military to finish the war in 2000 by not prematurely stopping the war with Eritrea this Awey and Sharif would not have anywhere to go and regroup and come back emboldened and strengthened. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister prematurely stopped the 2000 war with Eritrea against the advise of the Ethiopian army including his own Chief of Staff, the then governor of Tigrai, the then Chief of the Ethiopian air force, but most importantly against the will and desire of the Ethiopian people. So, what we see in Somalia is a consequence of that monumental error.

We always accuse Issayas, Egypt, and so and so forth, all the problem we have due to our own useless leadership. One man repeat many mistakes 100 times, there is no anyone can tell him besmeam bel. He betrayed our soldiers, and the victory of our people and handed our country. dccording sources from Asmara, Issayas Afeworki was getting ready to take a life boat to Saudi Arabia. But Meles saved him, Issayas breathed life once again, resurrected. He organized ONLF, OLF, .... UIC in Somalia. And we have to go to Somalia to make another useless war and sacrifice our beloved people for Shabia's sake.

On top of this our people have to pay 1 billion dollars every year to use ports of other countries while ours is sitting idle. Our prime Minister wanted and envied to our a land-locked Ethiopia.

Because our Prime Ministers repeated mistakes, Ethiopians have to keep on paying the price of thier life. We have been asking many mistakes have been committed and our people are paying the price. However, no one has ears to hear us. Aweys issue is the result of weyane. It wanted to establish greater Tigray. It took land from Wello, Gonder and Afar. Finally it committed a big mistake by trying to do the same from Eritrea. Weyane used Ormo youth as cannon fodder to win EDF. It lost and went back to where it came from. Later it signed a peace treaty to be abided by the rule of the law and reengaged on that as well. The latter mistake is burning the horn of Africa. How do you think you will leave peacefully while you are occupying the land of the few and brave? Weyane thinks Eritrea will be getting weaker and weaker and finally will be able to establish the greater Tigrai dream. That is gone. Eritrea is going to sell gold soon. That means economically the hard times will be over.

I agree 100% with the opinion posted by Dan and Gezae. All these problems because of Meles’ repeated unknowingly or knowingly made mistakes. Endless mistakes!!! Looking back to all what has been done by him till now, (Eritrean independence, the ending of 2000 war short of its goal to save Isaias, making our country landlocked without even willing to negotiate over it, instead trying to convince Ethiopian people that we do not need ports. He preferred to send our Army to Somalia which was auxiliary problem, instead of dealing properly with the root cause of all problems sites in Asmara). Certainly all his actions and decisions made up to now regarding Eritrea, favored Eritrea at the expense of Ethiopia. I do not understand why he repeatedly wants to fool us. This signals a watershed not only in the domestic affairs of volatile and unstable Somalia, but between Somalia and Ethiopia. It was Sheik Awes who openly declared Jihad on Ethiopia and it was none other than Awes himself who called the cuurent Somalian Government a stooge. For him to return to Somalia whose leader has "special relationship"with Ethiopia is indicative of better days ahead for Ethio-Somalian relations. His return must have come after the tacit approval of Prime Minister Meles'administration. The loser is undoubtedly Shabia.

As an Ethiopian citizen, the retrun of Aways to Somalia really wories me. I also belive that the Ethiopian Gov't should do something ASAP. I tell you unless this Terorist is killed ASAP, he will creat strong mov't even worse than the previous. According to Garoweonline.com, Aweys is in Mogadishu to reconcile the factions and he will still keep his office in Asmara open. I do not take Aweys move as a positive towards peace in Somalia and Ethiopia at all.

The truth of the matter is that wedi-Afom used the Aweya card so wisely. He used him to improve his relations with the west. Just FYI, the American Ambassador in Asmara hinted that there is a softened stand on the Eritrean side in regard to Somalia. I don't understand why the Ethiopia government went to Somalia at the beginning. The PM Meles Zenawi claimed repeatedly that Mr. Awey declared war on Ethiopia and sees an immediate danger. For open minded person there weren't immediate danger. We haven't seen action except talk (Gura) by Awey. To the contrary from the north side dictator Esayas is terrorizing our people for so long - Esayas has destroyed High School in Shire, attempt and took Ethiopian citizen and foreign tourist as hostage. More than 100k Ethiopian government soldiers are stationed in the north for so many year and that has a big impact in our people social and economical life. I think this are the immediate danger. MOGADISHU (Sh. M. Network)--The chairman of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia Sheik Hassan Dahir Aways has welcomed on Friday the decision of the parliament and called for African Union troops to leave the country.

Sheik Aways spoke hundreds of people in Mogadishu and talked about different issues.

He said it was a good decision that the parliament endorsed the Islamic Sharia but he doubted about the implementation of it since the United States and Ethiopia welcomed it.

“It was a good decision that the parliament said we are implementing Sharia, but the question is that the Sharia that Ethiopia and the United States supported is it the correct Sharia,” said Dahir Aways.

He called the African Union troops known as AMISOM in Somalia to leave the country and return to their countries.

“Once there are foreign troops in your country, you can not sleep well, you can not say your prayers and they are like a bacteria in our country and we recommend to them to go to their countries before we fight them as we fought the Ethiopian troops who fled from this country,” Aways said.

He also condemned the assassinations in Mogadishu and said the enemy of the Somali people is behind them.

To Dende. I am suspecting that the one writing in the name of Denden must be that jurk (Isayas Afeworki)himself. Otherwise, no sane person cannot compare Isayas with Meles. They are at the two ends of a continuum. Isayas is the laughing stock of every one.

This is a big failure for Ethiopia's foreign policy toward Somalia, and all invasion of Somalia meaningless, because those forces which have been driven out of Moqadishu few years back, have come to the throne again, at this time even with big support from the international community. Aweyes return falsfies and nullifies Meles's recent press statement which says that the hard liners have been dissociated from the moderates. What we observe is that the Somali's are coming together for a common purpose than disuniting among themselves. One can even speak a policy victory for Isayas because Aweyes is still a formidable man who can make a diffrence in Somalia, and who can implement the policies of Isayas against Ethiopia. Meles's has got a leadership crisis because of its foreign policy failures from time to time. Now we don't find any foreign policy success to the credit of Meles's leadership; we were assuming tha the Somalia policy was partly a success few years ago, after the Ethiopian army kicked them out and lessened their threat, but now everything has become a zero sum game. The somali's came out even being more triumphant. This beggs the question for what dear Ethiopians were fighting? What was the purpose of wasting a huge some of money, sacrificing the youth? No answer. The worst thing in Ethiopia is that the leaders don't accept their failure.I think Meles has to ask many many excuses for his policy failure both the opposition and the Ethiopian people.

AWey's return is nothing than apparent failure of PM M Z. on Eritrea. If the war in 2000 could have been finished, we would not have all these war repeat in Somalia, in Ogaden or even within Ethiopa. PM saved that war to continue forever.

Now it cannot be differnt, even going to Mogadisho was wrong. The best strategy was to eliminate Issayas. Meles did not agree. He said Issayas is not a threat. He said Awey is the threat. Then Awey run to Issayas to save himself since he was his sponsor. That is self-evident

Now Awey was on holiday in Asmara for two years. Issayas did not fight war, but we fought a war in Somalia because of him. Now the man is fresh in Magadisho, and he has more support than ever before. This time, after one year, believe it or not we will have two wars.

2. Secondly, ONFL will get more shelter and support now and OLF. AWey will open war together with ONLF and OLF and with Shabia.

The best stragety in my opinion, just to wait and get read for the worst Scenario and to win the next war with victory, hopefully it happens while Meles is not anymore in the palace since he will abort any victory our people achieve. This commentary concerns a recent article written by the “Ethiopian” Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) under the name Adal Isaw, and was published on Aigaforum. In the article, MoFA calls for the deportation of Berhanu Nega, leader of Ginbot 7, on the basis that he is a “terrorist”. Never mind the legal definition of a terrorist or what a legitimate government is, we are more interested in the fact that the article is an epitome of the mindset of leaders of the regime.

Of course we don’t expect it to be anything else but that. However, we would still like to point out to them that, even looking at the matter from their point of view, they are engaged in a futile exercise.

The piece is a perfect portrayal of the regime’s continued refusal to acknowledge Ethiopians as citizens to whom it ought to be accountable, and whose interests it should serve above all. It also reflects perfectly what has for a long time been the defining character of the ruling party, which is inability to understand the fundamental ideas associated with the struggle for freedom and democracy.

Although the overriding theme appears to be the call for Dr. Berhanu’s deportation, equally important is MoFA’s plea of rescue to America. In fact, it goes further than a plea; it is a warning for America that unless the latter acts upon MoFA’s request, their “counter-terrorism” alliance may be broken.

The article draws a background of a country located in “one of the roughest neighborhoods in the world”. It emphasizes the fact that this happened not by choice, as if that is not apparent already. It appears as if the regime is trying to hide that it actually loves that exact location our country is at. After all, it has been receiving the support that has so far contributed to its survival from the US in the name of fighting terrorism in this “rough neighborhood”.

That is why, in going further to endear itself to the US, the regime portrays itself as an entity whose very existence is to serve the interests of the US. Nowhere does it mention Ethiopians’ interests. Of course one cannot blame it for not acknowledging Ethiopians as its constituents, because they are not. Since that became glaringly obvious especially after the 2005 elections, the regime had to come up with the “developmental state” rhetoric to justify its existence. But in this article, even that fake development talk was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps it is an implicit admission that it has not worked either.

Considering all that, it may be fair for MoFA to direct its appeal for rescue at America. After all, according to the regime’s own press release, the recent challenge on its illegitimate seat came from the military. Considering how it has used the armed and security forces to repress dissent in the past and had confidence to rely on them for the future, for the challenge to come from the military is a sign that its ground is shaking.

In the past several years, there have been widespread politically motivated layoffs within the army. The regime has weeded out those it believed supported opposition. The upper level positions within the army were given to those the regime can trust, and are of the same ethnic group as the ruling clique. Despite all these “precautions”, a few people found a way to organize a challenge. So, for a regime that does not have the backing of its citizens, whose attempts to justify its existence have been futile, and whose own army challenges it, it doesn’t come as a surprise for it to totally ignore its own citizens and prostrate itself before a foreign power and beg for rescue. It has to ask some one for help.

The manner in which the request to deport Berhanu Nega is being made to the US government is also worthy of attention. As if there are no laws or procedures in America, the Department of Defense is supposed to take Berhanu’s name because he is challenging an illegitimate government, pass it on to DHS, who will ask no questions about the rights of an individual.

Yeah, the different agencies of the US government will take a person as a terrorist because some rogue government with a habit of labeling all of its opposition a terrorist labels him too. This reflects on the part of MoFA a crucial misunderstanding of the values upon which America was built, in addition to the tenets of basic human rights. It is also a reflection of how business is conducted in Ethiopia, where the judiciary and other branches of government have repeatedly proven themselves to be no more than the executioners of the ruling party’s repression.

MoFA explains that the deportation of Berhanu Nega to Ethiopia will make Ethiopia’s “counter-terrorism” efforts more “effective”. What it really means is that the regime hopes to slow down or destroy the struggle for democracy and justice in Ethiopia. We know this because it has been the story of our country for the last eighteen years. This belief that going after individuals will stop opposition has been the defining character of the regime.

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that the US government deports Dr. Berhanu Nega to Ethiopia. He may be put in the same prison he has repeatedly been put in before, or he may even get executed. Is that supposed to be success? Absolutely not.

The problem with the regime has always been its failure to understand that the question of democracy and justice is one that is shared by millions of Ethiopians. If it wasn’t, the question would have died the day they tortured and killed the first Oromo boy they suspected of being a member of an illegal opposition group a couple of years after they took power. The question would have stopped coming throughout the years the lives of countless Ethiopian citizens were unjustly taken because they stood up for what they believed in. It would have stopped some months ago when they put Bertukan Mideksa in solitary confinement.

Dr. Berhanu is our brother in the struggle. He, just like the rest of us, understands the sacrifices attached to waging a struggle against repressive regimes. Prison or not, death or not, deportation or not, we will fight the TPLF. And we will remove the illegitimate and repressive government.

The regime needs to understand that killing or imprisoning a person never amounts to killing his or her values. The values are location and time transcendent, and are shared by millions. Just a few weeks ago, the regime’s mouthpieces were questioning just how exactly Berhanu Nega was going to sit in exile and remove the government in Ethiopia. “Is he going to use a remote control?” they mocked. Little do they understand that Berhanu connected with millions of Ethiopians back home through shared values. And this week, they have found themselves claiming that he was the mastermind of a coup attempt locally led by an active military general. The contradictions could not be more glaring. Ginbot 7 denies involvement, but that is beside the point.

Since the claim is coming from the regime itself and they believe it to be the case, what exactly does that teach them? Berhanu Nega could not have used a remote control to direct human beings to make such risky moves and put their lives in danger. These are adults who must have given this a serious thought and chose to go ahead with their plan because they have conviction for it.

Clearly, these men aren’t the ordinary robotic generals (the likes of Gen. KASA DEME) the ruling party loves to keep close to itself. These are men who have their own brains, and who chose to do what they believed in regardless of the danger their actions entailed. They did what they did while THINKING. And it is perfectly within reason to think that there are more of these people within the army and elsewhere. So, how exactly is going after a few individuals supposed to destroy the movement?

The answer is really clear and short. Leaders of the dictatorship have never understood the concept of individual choice and of principles. That should be self evident because if they did, they wouldn’t be dictators; assuming they are sane and all. They could never understand why a person would turn down their bribes, and their open door policy towards corruption, in order to go do something he/she “believes in”.

They never seem to wake up to the lesson either. They have arrested this man, Berhanu, several times before and each time, he seems to come at them stronger. They thought their attack on Kinijit has destroyed the movement that humiliated them and showed their nakedness to the eyes of all Ethiopians and the international community. But it seems to get more sophisticated and keep coming at them.

The struggle for justice and democracy keeps getting bigger and bigger. That is so because the organizations are nothing more than the reflections of our beliefs. Each time they and their leadership are attacked, more of us are awakened to injustice. The harsher the attacks get, the closer they get to most of us. So we come to find it in our advantage to join in the chorus and demand justice.

One cannot “foil” Ginbot 7. Because I am Ginbot 7, and I am as alive and free as ever. When you arrest me in Addis, I will be free in Gambella. When you kill me in Gondar, I will be alive in Wollega. I am whispering the message of freedom in the ears of young people in Welqitte; while you toil to find me in Adama. That is the same whisper that wakes you up abruptly at night. You may rape my sisters and burn our village in the Ogaden, but I am eating at what you claim to be the basis of your existence in Tigray.
