Election 2010 by all indication is going to be as popular if not more as election 2005 was. As we all know a spectacular peaceful election 2005 was tarnished by events that followed after the election. Ethiopians are hoping lessons were learned both by the government and the oppositions no to repeat past mistakes. The recently signed code of conduct by most oppositions and the EPRDF is a good sign that indeed lessons have been learned.
But in Ethiopia political groups are born every election and the learning curve is always there with all new comers. The latest new comers are ARENA, UDJ and MEDREK. ARENA’s constituents are mainly Tigreans, it is a regional player. UDJ is a national player and claims its constituents will be allover the country. UDJ has nominated an ex-EPRDF to represent its ideal and stand for election in Qola Tembien.
UDJ through its nominee is already claiming foul play if its nominee does not win! Remember Eng Hailu election night claim that Addis Ababa election was rigged!
Qola Tembien is in Tigrai where ARENA is expected to contest TPLF another regional player. TPLF as we all know is the governing party in Tigrai and will contest every regional and federal seats. But will ARENA contest every seat? Will it contest Qola Tembien seat against UDJ? Aite Gebru in his recent interview with Merhawit Radio said the link between UDJ and ARENA is a very thin thread. He said MEDREK a coalition between ARENA and UDJ as well as others was formed with a minimum requirement. Many think that minimum requirement is hate against EPRDF but what ever it is it is not a link strong enough to pull UDJ strong man Siye to join ARENA. Siye joined UDJ shunning ARENA!
ARENA and UDJ do not see eye to eye when it comes to article 39 and land ownership and many critical pillars of the constitution of Ethiopia. Or do they!
The question is will ARENA forfeit its potential seat in Qola Tembien for expediency and dishearten its supporters? The lesson from election 2005 is that quick fix coalition do not last much and when push comes to shove and split rears its head, much like EDP/AEUP/Kestedemena, every organization will claim its seat for itself.
Also, elections are suppose to be about ideas and not personalities in Ethiopia. And, as we all know UDJ and ARENA’s idea’s are not the same. Unless ARENA thinks it is okay to use UDJ personalities regardless of their views and ideals as long as they help defeat EPRDF they must not forfeit any seat to UDJ or any one else. If they do then it all makes sense why many people think to this day TPLF split was not about ideas and policies but all about power!

As you know, TPLF members run in Oromo so what is the problem if UDJ members run in Tigray? Honestly, you are not making any sense at all.

It seems you are trying to infer that both UDJ and Arena will be fielding candidates in teh same wereda.
In case you do not know and have not followed events, there will be no Arena or UDJ candidates. There will be only Medrek candidates.
Therefore there is no UDH vs Arean issues. There is only Medrek.
Regarding Article 39, Ato Gebru came to Chicago and was asked about that. From the answer he gave Article 39 (the right of cessation) is not really a big issue for him. That is why Arena as part of Medrek accepted the rejection of cessation.
By the way the closeness of UDJ and Arena (even amiong their political philosophies is much much close).
Last I would like to share that I hvae also optimism that the coming election will be a histroru election. I doesn’t look like that way. Work for Democracy, not for perpetual dictatorship. One way or another (sooner or later) EPRDF will be ousted from office. Don’t think they will be there forevr. What matters is the legacy EPRDF leave behind? Will it end like its predecessors, Mengiistu and the Aste-King-with violent transfer of power or will EPRDF install a new era of modern change of government for the first time in the country’s history?
From waht you are doing and advising the government, you are taking the country to a viloent end. Otherwise why attack those who are trying to modernize the country’s politcs through peaceful way? Siye and Gebru will always share the historical blame for making their own country “landlocked” with collective madness of TPLF. However, many people have forgiven them for openly admitting this mistake and for trying to make Ethiopia the owner of her own port again. Infact millions are now even ready to give them their vote for national office. The great stride these former TPLF leaders made in short period of time by winning the herats and minds of million of Ethiopians including non-Tigrians like me is amazing.
Mr.Meles had the same chance to win the confidence of Ethiopians but he always choose to do the opposite. He always took measures that made millions of Ethiopians angry. He refused to make Ethiopia the owner of its own port again. He made many people sad and angry by not acting as a staes man and release the woman politician, Birtukan Medixa from prsion so that she can compete in a free election. Instead of encouraging Ethiopians (domestci and abroad) to invest on agriculture and produce more food for the country, he choose to give away Ethiopia’s agricultural land for foreigners who ship all the harvested crop to their countries. If he was concerned about food shortage in the country, he could have atleast forced the foreign agricultural investors to sell a good percentage of the crop inside Ethiopia for the domestci market. He didn’t do that. In short Mr.Meles rules the people but not govern them. He is feared but not respected. Those feared leaders are very much hated by the people and are sitting on a time bomb.
The respect Siye and Gebru won among the Ethiopian people is a hard won respect. Not long a go they were hated TPLF politicians. Not anymore. Now, when they speak or write, millions listen to them with great respect and trust Honestly, I envy them. Please encourage deomcracy for a change. The country will benefit from peace, not from hate and violence.

What is the problem Siye to run in quola Tembien?
Is this a crime to represent u home town? he fought 17 years to bring peace and freedom, but as he says, he alway spied and under survilance, can”t even had a chance to bring audance to a meeting and to texpress his idea and vision to his own people, it sound like second class citizen. What is wrong with tplf? How long they will concor tigray with cadres? instead of intelectual people that care about their people instead of their party, for example look at the Tigray head state ite Alka Stegay, he does’t even lead quola Tembien, he is just regular cadre and Meles he do’t like smart people just followers, but how long it will last this 5years or 10years but as time go democracy will privail, people will choose who ever they want

Lets make sense out of this context -hoping that multiparty politics will slowly evolve in Ethiopia. I think that the path Medrek has set seems to enter into agreement among its constituent parties to avoid vote splits. So I assume that if reason prevails, which may not be the case in many instances of Ethiopian politics, in places where Arena has a good candidate in Tigray, UDJ will forefit and in places where UDJ has good candidates then Arena will forefit. Indeed I assume that this will be the strategy for UDJ and Medrek all over the country. The net effect of which will be a tough competition between EPRDF, Medrek, UDJ. we should not foregt that there was a lot of regret among key opposition figures in 2005 for competing among each other and giving votes to EPRDF. I remeber there was a polling station where an EPRDF candidate won because the comeption between kinjit and UEDF was so stiff in that place. I do not think siye created Medrek or influneced its creation for non sense reasons. Now whether this will realize in actual practice is another vital issue we will see because I know Ethiopia’s politics since long and how dirty it is. If the above scenario happens I beleive the opposition has moved an important step forward and EPRDF will surely be threatned and if it wants to win and continue in power, it should clean its house early, clear those kurdids soon, provide good candidates who can present the party in debate and see what happens. What I see in EPRDf right now however is total panic. Telling people who provide sound arguments to shut up as if there is no constitutional freedom of expression, ordering the courts to close files that check the executive- for example kifle ketemas issue same title deed over same place to three people in one day and no body is held responsible. Rampant corruption, local politcal elite arogance etc etc. So let pro EPRDf people understand that in as much as the party does well in many sectors, there is also a deep resentment in the people over abuse of power and failing to respect the rules of the country.

Aiga. I don’t expect any positive comments from you regarding ARENA, UDJ or MEDREK. You have already lost your sight to see the whole country. ARENA and UDJ are member of MEDREK and they have a manifasto by which they decided to be governed with. You need to understand what a coalition means other wise there would not be coalition if all these parties under MEDREK have similarty in every point. But they all beleive that any issues would be resolved in the ambrela of Ethiopia that means Article 39 and other short sighted agendas will not be entertained at all.
I know your problem about Siye and Gebru. This days in Tigray TPLF is nothing than Nebereya nebere. So this people are working hard ususal as we knew them before to clean the messes that have been created by TPLF so far. Therefore TPLF is in some critical time now looking for peoples like Aiga to save it.
Another point that should be clear is Siye is not only running for Qola Temben but also for Temben, Tigray and Ethiopia as a whole.

The very reason as to why Gebru and other former TPLF members formed the so called ARENA party is not be cause they thought sincerely an alternative party is deserved to the people of Tigray but because they want to revange the government. What is most surprising of these personalities is that ,it seems, they do not totally know with whom they should form friendship so that they can get the suppot of the supposed tTigrean voters. In deed, it is crystal clear that most of the ‘politicians’ in Medrek are, in essence, Derguists who were commiting un told atrocities of mass murder and day light bombing, Dr. Hailu Araya is a case in point, whom the people of Tigray do not want even to here their names let alone to elect them. Therefore, what Seeye, Gebru and the like will do in the up coming election is this: they will participate in the election, they will not be elected, they will say the vote is stolen, they will initiate choas and sure they will be arrested so that it will be the end of the story

Are you questioning the legitimacy of MEDREK because you, the blind supports of the TPLF killing machine, are not in it or at leaset don’t control it? We also know that you hate any one who raise the human, political and economic rights of Tigrean in particular and Ethiopia in General. now, you are trying to divide the people as you usually do. is it you to decide for medrek what election tactic and strategy to follow or the party itself? If I have to be honest, the election is already decided. we already know who and where he/she is elected. we can enlist the names like meles, azeb, seyum, mulugeta etc. are elected. I don’t see any problem with the coallation of Medrek as far as they are working in the principle of “Negotiation/mechachal” and “Give and take”.
Regarding the TPLF split sure it was mainly a POWER issue, if not and it is considered political it must be on political difference regarding the relation, the war and its finishing with Eritrea.
