I think the PM is right on the $$. The Amharic broadcast is notoriously biased. The choice of words by the commentators is a clear evidence. for example when referring to foreign investors in farming, they chose the word ‘Baadan’ which is inherently biased and meant to instigate violence against them by those in the immediate vicinity. We know well the connotation of such terminology.They could have chosen other mild term like ” ye Wuch investors’. It makes my blood boil every time i am referred as an Alien in this country. Such choice of words, unfortunately is characteristic of the whole broadcast which is manned by folks with serious bias against the govt. There isn’t an iota of objectivity in the programme as those behind the microphone have an agenda and cannt be characterized as journalists by any standard.No wonder, the broadcast is routinely rerun on notorious anti govt pal talk sites like Current affairs which is full of irrational dergue era pundits and chauvnists. Specially, the comment forum (audio clips) is intentionally representative of those who have extreme bias against the govt. A recent commentator called the Prime minister as ‘ durye’. so much for any sort of objectivity.
What the VOA should do is recruit those who were born in the US and fire all those expatriate refugees, dergists and chauvinists from their rank to make it as objective as possible.
We know well the ‘ financial clout’ of those in Washington DC Diaspora community and it will be naive to assume that they are not influencing those who are propagating systemic anti govt insurrection. It will be naive to assume any change in the ‘ Broadcast’ anytime soon. I am afraid neither the VOA administration nor those at the State Department understand the nuances of the Amharic language unless they are native speakers and naively assume the broadcast is neutral and objective which further from the truth. The only solution is to fetch US born Amharic speakers to man the mic and rid of the elements with deep entrenched bias.
We never expect VOA to be fair as the master heads are old dogs that can’t see the reality which is happening back in Ethiopia. Let them bark, people will decide who stands for real democracy.and who goes to stabilize the country.

I sometimes used to listen voa. most of its programs are false and pessimist about Ethiopia. In my opinion the Ethiopian government has taken a proper action. Most of my friends and me are highly pleased. Let the voa go down hell.
Another 5 years would give the government a chance to finish the development project we had planed for our countery for a long time.After that they can choose whoever they want in a democratic prosses.

I do not listen to VOA. I have never done so. But the story has caught my attention.
This thing is so important to them that they are looking for various alternatives to beam their ‘freedom voice’ to Ethiopia.

-Well they have to show the world that any one with an independent mind and any country with an independent policy will not succeed.

The other issue that shall be addressed is the role of VOA amaharic in the growing anti-americanism in the country. It is not only the government and the opposition parties that are working for the transformation of the country but also the society (Ethiopian people from every walk of life) doing at most effort to change the country in every aspect and also brought impressive results. Dispite the fact, it is disheartning for us Ethiopians to be bombarded (every day) by a propoganda of VOA Amharic; full of pesimistic, inciting, and also hope-lessness preaching broadcasting.
I wish to give one example which is aired recently regarding China’s engagement in infrastructure development in Ethiopia. On the surface it looks inocent. Of all thousends economic, cultural, social, technological, environmental, etc, issues that could be informatively discussed, most of the time was spent talking about the graveyard of the Chinease construction workers. This is such a peripheral issue which might deserve footnote. I am not belittling the people who lost their life by accident during the construction work. I was wondering what was the intention of the journalist? What is the editorial policy of VOA amharic whic enable the journalist to dewel on the graveyard.
Another issue is their deliberate selection of news. For instance we hear for the first time the names of any old or new Ethiopian Universities when there is either Fire, students protest, termination of contract of Ethiopian or foreign professor or the like the sky is falling stories. According to VOA, Bahir Dar University students and management are always in warfare, Jimma university students are not learning rather they are always stabing each other, Gondar University and Ambo are always burning, AAU is always dismissing professors of opposition parties (except of course Gudina and Petros), but luckly Mekele University is always active in research and signing agreement contract with 1000 universities all over the world. Any Ethiopian knows the intention of this message.
What about their word selection.
VOA Amharic is not serving the interest of America either. Only few educated in Ethiopia do diffrenciate between US and VOA. However, for the majority as Ethiopia radio is more or less an expression of eth. government’s stand, VOA is perceived in the same analogy. VOA’s harm to American interest in the horn of Africa can not be ignored. In an era where US is making at most effort to win the hearts and minds of the Arab and Muslim world (partly caused by insensitive and arogant american media approach), it can not afford to create new enemy based on ill advised and ill run Amahric program. The image of VOA is so much tainted when the prime minister finaly gave up and openly tell US to shape this outlet. Why VOA amharic is diffrent from all foreign Amharic programs? That is the issue to be examined accademically or by US foreign office. Meles has thrown a very very hard ball at the US. US can do any more business as usual. The mentioning of Ruwanda in association of the VOA program is a wake up call. US shall examine what is cooking in its front yard (DC). I am one of the Ethiopian who still believe US is capable of examining VOA Amahric and re-shape the program because US stake in Ethiopia and Africa is too big to be kidnapped by few disgrunted diaspora propogandists.
Friendship and Interest….and the VOA amharic???
The main reason of the US friendship to Ethiopia or to any state is not the friendship itself but national interest. If one believes and takes for grant the friendship as raw as it is, he or she is more than naive.
Accordingly, friendship based on interest will always look for better friends who will protect and maximize its interest. So if Ethiopia protects its national interest more than the expectations of her friend, it is natural for the friend to put pressure to change the status quao or look for another friend who will be willing to serve the friend at the expense of one-self. This is not a cup of tea of the EPRDF, thus the friend (US) has always been making pressure to maximize her interest but at the same time looking for a servant who will give up the entire own interest for a friend.
I am not surprised to see the US not protecting her friend’s interest; instead, it is using all weaknesses as an instrument to make pressure in a bid to maximize her interest. Medias like that of VOA-Amharic serves for all sorts of extremists and this is not the headache of the friend whose eyes and ears are only targeting its interest. What does the friend gets from the unfair propaganda waged by Adisu and co? well, it uses it as instrument to threaten the poor friend to maximize its interest.
The best way out of the tricks and be part of the real game which enables the friend to stand at equal or fair feet with his friend is to work hard as the EPRDF is doing today… but devise a quick exit strategy from the hands of the friends’ Aid. Whether we like it or not, critisize it or not, the people in the VOA will never change their evil position. And their sponsor will use them as a stick. Can we make a change by filing a charge to whom it may concern??? I cannot imagine the friend will change the course.
Voa is not a media, but it is a hiding place of loosers who couldn’t be a men to fullfill their political agenda. the remnants of EPRP & degists! they couldn’t forget the stick of TPLF 32 years later!
The American state department could have decipiled the VOA stuffs but they don’t care about what could happen because of the VOA false,fabricated lies that they spread to the innocent ethiopians in Ethiopia.

The world is so complex. Everyone does what EPRDF does which means everyone is after business. Even if the broadcastees are shuffled, still VOA will serve the interest of groups. It does not matter who run it.
The amharic language what we understand. But the semantics of VOA is no time to puruse Ethiopian interest in one way or the other.
If you see during derg time, VOA was similarly doing the same business. According to me, why do we need a radio station based in London or Washington? For what? This is not to support EPRDF but even if the govenment in Ethiopia is another one, why do we need VOA which is a pure political broadcasting station? VOA is by nature pure political from its essence. It is set up to be the steward of USA global interest. It has nothing to with humanity or freedom or whatsoever.
If it freedom, we have to realize it ourselves we do not need to be whipped by annone to have freedom. I oppose the administration in addis with no doubt. But I do not believe any influence from outside will bring freedom because in the first place no one can work for our freedom except ourselves.
It is true we do not know freedom in Ethiopia. It is not just Meles. I guess all Ethiopians do not know freedom, tolerance , fairness, justice, equality because their indentity is their ethnic and their priority is thier selves or their ethnic. In such environment it is impossible to have freedom. You cannot have by controlling the whole government by ethnic affiliation.
The bad thing about Ethiopia is that everyone is the same. The mentaliy of Ethiopians is backward, narrow, repressive by nature or by default.

Meles struggled for 17 years. He used the people of Tigray as his white horse to get the Arat kilo, not only the people of Tigray, even he used his comrades to get where he is today. He has now dumped the people of Tigray and his own comrades. He now lives in addis in high comfort zone. Meles used to snatch supper when he was a bandit. He now forget everything. Now Meles is not working with his citizen. He is selling Haraji in Ethiopia , national assets like bank, telecom, land, water, … everything in Ethiopia on sale. This is a disgrace in the Ethiopian history. One cannot develop by selling his own home to somebody else and by living in the open air? This is really what is happening in Ethiopia now. Investors are publishing articles that say Ethiopia is developing because of investment and Meles felt good and he is on bazzare spree selling everything in Ethiopia.
Diaspoara Ethiopians are empty drummers who does not know what they are doing. They rally in london and washingtod and preach thier hatred to Meles in the face of the world. Thier blind and unwise strategy of demonizing Meles and his adminstration without focusing on the weakness of the government except spewing their venom hatred is helping Meles to be on strong position. When ever I listen to the VOA Amharic program, I question my self if the radio station works for forces that have the interest to harm Ethiopia. Fairness is the basic required quality of a journalist even if the news goes against the journalist values. Yet, I truly do not consider some of the VOA Amharic staff members as journalists. I heard those individuals were former EPRP members who asked for political asylum in the USA years a go, and now advocate for the policy of their old political club. I am sure every listener including those that are served by the malicious propaganda of the radio station knows VOA is very biased.
I do not consider the notorious VOA as reliable source of information because its presentation is often prejudiced, backward and venomous. I am glad the Ethiopian government has now understood the cheap propaganda and misinformation VOA Amharic program has been transmitting; and hope it does what is just to stop it.

In all fairness, the American government must close VOA Amharic until the two tribes, Amhara and Tigrai, are leveled down to the rest of the tribes since the problems are but extension of the hatred between Shoa and Tigrai which goes back to Menilik’s time.

The first question to be raised is that why people want to listen to VOA than ET radio or ETV?
There could be many to incite from quality to quantity of information that are blurred by the journalists that are serving ET radio or ETV since they are hand squeezed to propagate what are said to broadcast.
It was not years when Meles said to a journalists that he has to report what he thinks is facts and what he beleive in but this situation is a knife at the back after the 2005 election that the ruling party lost with KO from politics.
What came next is to frustrate the journalists in the country as well those of free press from three different corners, namely, the press law,the antiterrorist law and criminal law of the country and to red rule the provisions given on the constitution article 29.1-7.
As indicated above if you could not have access to true and factual news but to fabricated feeding and one party propoganda ine looks to other sources to counter check the facts and since the Imperial regime one of the two Radios herd are either VOA or Duestchwelle for fact finding because Ethiopians do not hear nothing what is happening in their back yards since the press is blind folded with the laws prevailed.
To substantiate the above situation i can site the Famine of 1973/4, 1984/5 and the 2002/3 are heard from foreign source not from ETV or ET radio. Moreover the collapsing part of Gilgel Gibe was also heard from foreign journalists not from both insiders.

I am now watching nothing but ETV 24/7.My political and social awareness has skyrocketed since then specially about ethiopia.The plan to reach every ethiopian around the world with ETV is one example of our PM brilliant effort to educate his beloved people.As The first democratically elected ruler we Ethiopians should support him and remember him in our prayers in all his endeavor and the stamina to keep him going to lead us in the future until our country reaches its greatness.

Despite VOA journalists now the real developmental situation in Ethiopia, they are biased and are bent on defaming every incremental to Ethiopia’s development.As far as VOA is one sided and partisan to those who yearn for violence to bring back their DERG time confort and power, the Ethiopian government is legitimate in doin g everything to curtail the unhealthy propoganda to the people who elected them. the other point is;Ethiopia called Ethiopians to fight against shaebia, many heed her call & defeated shaebia successfully. If the government has to beg former dergists it has to! The former fought shaebia not because of they were begged but because Ethiopia is their country & the gave it the most respect.
The other point is; it doesn’t matter wether shaebia is there or not! It can never be a threat to Ethiopia. Everytime they threaten Ethiopia they will be endangering themselves very badly.

Asa true and democratic ethiopian the present government is investing heavily communication technology such as transmitting its ETV programs to all ethiopians all over the world.Our great leader is determined to reach every ethiopian with a massage of democracy and prosperity.We should at least watch the programs if we are not able to be in the country.

Since HE Prime Minister Zenawi announced his govt’s intention to jam the VOA Amharic broadcast, I have been dosing up on VOA Amharic more than ever. The ‘ Talking heads’ are all at it again. They are hail bent on routing the govt at any cost. They aren’t even modifying their rigid rhetoric. Midikesa is the number one story, as much i wish the govt freed or exiled her, i am not sure this lady who bred a child out of wedlock is, despite her good looks, is capable of leading the country . Never forget that family value is more important in our conservative country. I doubt if a weizerit will be chosen and have no clue why the wise Premier is even worried about her. It is counter productive to his massive contribution to the betterment of Africa. His sole contribution to the COP15 summit was recognized by preeminent statesmen and even British senior diplomats who applauded his contribution to the success of the Copenhagen Summit
The reality in Ethiopia is quite different according to my sources who, by any standard, aren’t big fans of the Govt. Each and everyone is telling me the massive construction boon and growth in the Capital and beyond. An American Physician, who is a frequent traveler to the country, i came across, even confessed that Addis Ababa’s boulevards are amongst the most beautiful in the Continent.
This being the case, the VOA Amharic hasn’t had a single broadcast about the massive development effort being undertaken by the current regime.
I will think soon after the complaint by a friendly Nation, the VOA administration will try to temper those behind the microphone. I guess not.
The final straw came when the ” Seteta show” was equating victims of Red Terror with those who massacred tens of thousands of Ethiopians while commenting on the erection of a monument to the victims of Red Terror and were occasionally killed in retribution. Is the United States State Department aware of such flaud editorial policy of this runaway band of sick individuals who have the nerve to advocate for erecting monument for the very few who were responsible for not only killing tens of thousands of Ethiopians in cold blood and throwing them on the streets ,but forbidding loved ones to shed tears and charging them for the bullets dispensed to kill their relatives. I doubt it very much.

This is one of the most revealing analyses I hve red on any net on Ethiopia. There is nothing questionable in it. Keep it on the net until the end of the elections in ethiopia. It’s just a mirror that shows the true nature of the Ethiopian opposition and their supporters anywhere.I recommend that it be read to the people of Ethiopia in a diplomatic language.
Regarding VOA i understand that either they don’t know today’s Ethiopia or they don’t want to know. They are still thinking and speaking about one part of Ethiopia an all aspect (politics, culture, and social and religion aspect). Please VOA people not only in the politics but also in all other social, cultural and religion affairs please try to be balance and faire. But this doesn’t mean that ETV is also balance and faire in its program. But ETV relatively better than VOA when I evaluate from all direction.
Finally, for our future prosperous Ethiopia we need balanced and faire information from all side.
