Around two hundred Tigreans from in and around Washington Metro Area convened and held a historical meeting that made the reinstatement of TDA Chapter Washington, DC, possible last week, April 16, 2006 at Howard University, Blackburn Center Hall. The meeting also passed a resolution to construct primary schools in Tigray.

The meeting was addressed by Amb. Tewolde Gebru in which he gave details, in brief, about some of the past major accomplishments of TDA, the role TDA International has played in providing health and education facilities in Tigray, and about the results of his tour in the USA. He said that his tour was fruitful -- TDA Chapters in cities he held meetings were reinstated, resolutions to construct primary schools in Tigray were passed/promised, and above all the cooperation he received from Tigreans every where was commedable.

Based on the briefings, a constructive discussion was conducted for about three hours. Ambassador Tewolde Gebru took this opportunity to address the questions, view and opinions posed in a manner to clear all outstanding issues revolving around TDA International. Among the other things he stressed was the unity of Ethiopians and the need to make a concerted effort to uproot poverty form Ethiopia. Hence, he called upon all Ethiopians in general and Tigreans in particular to unite and join hands towards developing their homeland.

Finally, the meeting concluded its session successfully. TDA Chapter Washington was reinstated with unanimous support, seven executive members were elected from among the participants, and at last the house passed a resolution to construct four primary schools in two differnt zone of Tigray namely Wolkait and Raya (the specific sites would be provided by TDA International later on). The newly elected executive committee of TDA Chapter Washington DC incuded new blood, young and professional members.

The spirit of determination and commitment by the participants was so strong that every one was highly enthusiastic to translate the resolution in to practice. More than $17,000 was contributed in pledge and cash at the spot. It is anticipated that if some five hundred Tigreans who reside in and around Washington Metro Area could manage to at least, on the average, contribute three hundred dollars each, four beautiful primary schools could be built for the needy in Tigray. In the meeting, it was stated that more than one thousand family heads of Tigreans reside in Washington Metro Area and its environs. If it is so, the matter would be as beautiful as 'hamsa lemin nehade seb shekem, nihamsa seb gina melkiu'.

During his stay in Washington DC, the Ambassador had a meeting with Tigrean Professionals Association. Major points were posed on how TDA and the Association could work in collaboration with each other. Members of the Tigrean Professional Association vowed to strengthen their Association and work in partnership with TDA.

Tigreans everywhere in the world are making a shining history to make sure poverty is crushed the sooner the better. The examples of some of the accomplishments so far done by Tigreans residing in Germany, Saudi Arabia and the United States are proof by themselves to show their strong determination to do away with poverty. In a matter of one month, Tigreans in Boston, Chicago, Bay Area, Seattle, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Santiago, Denver, New York and its environs, North Carolina and Washington Metro Area have rallied and pledged to construct primary schools in Tigray. Tigreans in Columbus(OH) and Houston/Dallas(Tx) have also initiated a move to follow suit. Outside of the USA, we are informed that Tigreans who reside in Toronto and Ottawa, Canada, are expected to join hands.

Washington Metro Area and Seattle have pledged to build four and two primary schools respectively. The rest cities have pledged to take one primary school each. Therefore, Tigreans in the United States of America would be engaged in realizing the construction of 17 primary schools in Tigray before the end of this year. A one month tour by Amb. Tewolde together with the positive response of all resolute and generous Tigreans in the United States of America has scored a historic record of $595,000. This is really fantastic and a sign of revival for us Tigreans in the diaspora. Those of us who reside in other cities have to make sure we are part of the movement. Toronto and Ottawa have to speed up their decision to join the movement of development. By doing so, we hope that more than twenty primary schools worth $700,000 would be covered this year. We can do it for sure. Therefore, we call upon all Tigreans in North America to join hands in the development efforts waged by the people of Tigray.
